The All American ranking is the eighth for Cardinal Points. It is the first time the newspaper has received the honor since the spring 2005 semester. All American status, given to student newspapers for journalistic excellence, is bestowed on only about 20 percent of college newspapers nationwide. Cardinal Points received a score of 950 and four marks of distinction. To be named an All American, a newspaper must score 900 or higher out of 1,090 points and receive at least four marks of distinction out of the five possible. Cardinal Points received marks of distinction for coverage and content; writing and editing; photos, art and graphics; and leadership. The 87 percent score was the highest for Cardinal Points since spring 2004, also an All American semester for the newspaper. The score is tied for fourth highest since the newspaper started entering newspapers for critique in the spring 1998 semester. "I'm very happy for the staff of Cardinal Points for being named an All American for the fall 2008 semester," said Shawn Murphy, chair of the PSUC journalism department and Cardinal Points' adviser. "I'm very proud of their collective efforts. To be ranked in the top 20 percent of college newspapers nationwide, that's quite an honor." Editor-in-Chief Ryan Hayner said: "It's an honor to be named as an All-American newspaper for the fall 2008 semester. When I started on staff here four years ago, we were coming off an All-American award and in the past we had won many. It was a goal of mine before I left to see Cardinal Points at an All-American status again. It's a lot of hard work paying off, and I want to commend the staff for the dedication they put it to producing one of the top papers in the country." Student-editors for the fall 2008 semester were: Ryan Hayner, Editor in Chief; Megan Munroe, Managing Editor; Alyssa Fleck, News Editor; Katie Via and Bob Bennett, Associate News Editors; Jessica Bakeman, Fuse Editor; Josh Miner, Associate Fuse Editor; Nick St. Denis, Sports Editor; Matt Rosenberg, Associate Sports Editor; Jim Elliott, Opinions Editor; Michelle Haynes, Photo Editor; Kelly Marsh, Associate Photo Editor; and John Christman, Advertising Manager. Shawn W. Murphy, Associate Professor of Journalism in the Department of Journalism, is the Faculty Adviser to Cardinal Points. He has advised the newspaper since fall 1998. Shawn W. It's good to know that two of the most hardcore journalists I've ever met are still kicking ass in various areas of the biz. Way to represent! As for the job opportunity I mentioned above... it's not the most ideal gig, but if any of you are struggling for work and love NFL football, it's kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Plus, I have to think it would look great on a resume. The basic idea is this -- CBSSports.com is putting together a network of 32 NFL correspondents... one for each team. These spots will be full-time, paid positions during the upcoming season, and will include attending games, training camp and other team activities. The pay will only be around $400 a week, but I'm guessing that there will be time to work another job if you can figure out a schedule. The application process also offers you all a definite advantage, in that we're looking for "fans", not necessarily trained journalists. Being a pro should help your case, though. Check out the link below to fill out an application and post some writing samples. (Yes, it really is that easy.) The search process will likely close in a couple weeks, so don't wait too long if you want to give it a shot. http://bleacherreport.com/cbs/correspondents I don't have much more information than that, but if anyone has a question I'll do my best to track down the answer. And that's why I'm posting. since leaving Plattsburgh I've been living and working South Korea. I chose S. Korea because the jobs here offer more incentives with less requirements than most other countries in the world. The average ESL (Enlgish as a Second Language) teacher here only has the minnimum requirment of a bachelors degree. However, coming to another country with a degree in English, and more specifically journalism, makes you much more marketable. For those who have never thought about it before, it's not as big of a jump as you might expect. there are great communities of expats and the jobs pay well for the work you do. I had been working in private english academies for the last three and a half years making about 25K-30K a year teaching very basic grammar and conversation to students of all ages and proffesions. I've taught doctors, lawyers, pilots, every level of school children, and even Korean English teachers. Now, after a little experience and with a Jou. degree I've landed a job as a "visiting English Professor" teaching university students in conversation and writing classes. I really pushed the Jou. aspect and the writing aspect of my resume so they hired me as the writing teacher for the Uni. I'm posting this because it's often an un-thought-of opportunity for graduates with no immediate job prosepcts, and for those who don't neccasarily want to go right into a newspaper or copy editing job for almost minnimum wage. Also, many esl teachers here just take the job for a year or two and work on their masters degree through online programs. So, if this ignites a spark of interest then I've posted a couple of the most popular recruiting websites for both Korea, and the world. there are many other esl recruiting sites out there and there are honestly about thirty new jobs a day (on average) posted on these sites. 1) Daves esl cafe : eslcafe.com : this covers jobs from around the world but also has a special sectioon for Korea. There are blogs on this site where people will answer any questions you may have about living/working abroad. 2) englishspectrum.com : this site is only for korea (as far as I know) and is a great place to post your resume and let the jobs come to you ( and they will ) 3) worknplay.co.kr : this is only a korean job site which has jobs and a decent newsletter of events to look forward to throughout the year in korea. this should get you started in your search for esl jobs abroad. Now I'll list the standard style job / benifits you should look for if this hasnt bored you yet. -About 2-2.3 mil. won a month ( about $1700-$2000 depening on currency fluctuations) -110-120 teaching hours a month ( about six classes a day) -free airfare to and from your home country -free housing, lightly furnished -medical insurance ( 50% paid by you, 50% by your employer) -national pension plan (should equal about one month's pay after a year's work) -severance pay equal to one months pay at the completions of your contract. (so, after a year's work, you get your paycheck 2K, your severance 2K and your pension 2K. its a nice last month) as I said these are only the basics... accept nothing less than this if you come. In addition to this, many teachers including myself teach private lessons which pay about 35-40 bucks an hour. So, many teachers here are actually pulling in about 30-40K a year minnimum. Some of my friends have no regard for their weekend so they work 7 days a week (by choice) and make anywhere from 50K to 70K a year. but that is litterally working all day everyday. I hope this helps some of you who don't know what the hell to do because newspapers are watching their sales plummit so your going into a saturated job market. Outsied of your country though, ESL jobs will be around for a long time to come. And honestly we are one of the last generations to fully take advatage of this situation becasue so many Asian countries are doing pretty well at developing their public school English educatioin. It's a great way to live abroad for a year or two, save about 10k a year, or just pay off your student loans. if you want to ask anythong about it, or if you've found a job you think is good feel free to run it by me so I can help you get a quality job ( if you come to Korea). and dont worry, its an extremely safe country, even with Kim Jong Il and North Korea only about an hour away. good luck (Prof.) Joe Samuelson III joesamuelson3d@hotmail.com _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live?: Keep your life in sync.
