From journalism-alumni at lists.plattsburgh.edu Tue Jul 14 17:05:43 2009 From: journalism-alumni at lists.plattsburgh.edu (journalism-alumni@lists.plattsburgh.edu) Date: Tue Jul 14 17:41:22 2009 Subject: [jou-alumni] copy editor position Message-ID: <281439.11717.qm@web53203.mail.re2.yahoo.com> To all: ? The Post-Star in Glens Falls N.Y.?(the one that just won the Pulitzer Prize) has an opening on its copy desk. ? We're looking for someone with a little experience with InDesign, though that could certainly mean college work on pages. The position is full-time, an evening shift, with benefits (health, vision, dental, 401k). It's also a position that is available right now -- we have someone leaving in early August and are filling this position as soon as possible. ? The paper also has?a long track record of success when hiring?Plattsburgh grads -- two senior editors, two reporters, and a copy editor?-- which is a good foot in the door. ? If you want more information on the position, feel free to e-mail me: tkehoe@poststar.com. ? If you want to apply, please send a resume and cover letter to News Editor Mary Serkalow: serkalow@poststar.com. ? Thanks, Todd Kehoe ? ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've begun to promote it to print media in the region. Any help that you can give to share this information with folks in your circles who might be interested would be greatly appreciated. I paste below and attach the program announcement. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, Shawn Shawn W. Murphy Associate Professor of Journalism Faculty Advisor to Cardinal Points Chair, Department of Journalism Co-Director, Center for Communication and Journalism 103-A Yokum Hall SUNY Plattsburgh 101 Broad St. Plattsburgh, NY 12901 518-564-2422, phone 518-564-2105, fax shawn.murphy@plattsburgh.edu Certificate in Multimedia Journalism SUNY Plattsburgh Hegis Code 5506 Purpose The purpose of this program is to retrain "old school" professional newspaper and magazine journalists in the region to be contemporary multimedia journalists, which is necessary as a result of the rapidly changing print media business. Understanding multimedia journalism is necessary to stay employed in today's newsroom. As has been widely covered in the mainstream press, print media as we have know it is quickly going the way of the dinosaur. Between January 2008 and June 2009, at least 120 U.S. newspapers have gone under, and countless others have filed for Chapter 11 or were teetering on implosion. SUNY Plattsburgh's Certificate in Multimedia Journalism is intended to be an outreach program to benefit working - or out of work - professional print journalists in the region, who are the target audience. Structure Students would have the opportunity to earn this certificate in a compressed time period, which is important for print professionals who need to be retrained in multimedia ASAP. Since all five courses are offered in fall semesters, a student could complete the certificate in one semester, especially if he/she were unemployed. Four of the five courses are offered both fall and spring semesters; one course, JOU 360, is offered only in the fall semesters. Content and Curriculum The certificate will have a total of 15 credits. There will be required five 3-credit courses, which will teach students how to cover a story in words, graphics, sounds and images for use on the Web. They are as follows: 1. JOU 206 Introduction to News Writing (3 cr., offered every fall and spring; requirement would be waived for professional reporters) 2. JOU 240 Audio-Video Production for Public Relations and Journalism (3 cr., offered every fall and spring) 3. JOU 316 Digital Publishing (3 cr., offered every fall and spring) 4. JOU 317 Web Design and Production (3 cr., offered every fall and spring) 5. JOU 360 Interactive Journalism (3 cr., offered only every fall) For more information, contact Shawn W. Murphy, Chair of the Department of Journalism, at 518-564-2422 or shawn.murphy@plattsburgh.edu. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
