Keep in mind you will need a good resume and some stellar clips (or portfolio) to get in the door. Also, Landmark is going on the auction block one company at a time. They just sold their prize jewel, the Weather Channel, to NBC and a few other investors. People are on the edge of their seats here. Best rumor I have heard is Democrat-Gazette's parent company is interested. Should know in a few months what happens. And oh yeah, a word of caution, they may be looking at it as a job for a younger reporter, but the online writer isn't basic stuff. Steve Stone did breaking news for close to 30 years here. They called him the "hurricane" because he always wrote the main weatherbar when the hurricanes were coming. -Hutchins Recent departures have led to SEVERAL job postings ? some old and some new. Here's the current situation: *Staff Writer/Online News*, to replace Steve Stone. (Team editor Jane Elizabeth) This reporter's primary role will be to write and post breaking news items and updates to breaking news stories for PilotOnline.com, primarily during peak times for online users. This will include morning news dispatches, evening and overnight crime and spot news, with the intent of competing with television news and other local online media. This reporter will have additional Web-related duties, such as shooting and editing video and audio, taking still photos, helping to create multimedia packages, producing short feature stories for online, using databases in reporting, and posting breaking news to social networking sites. Hours and days will vary; this job will include nighttime and weekend scheduling. The job code for this position is 2329. *Staff Writer/Urban Team, to fill Matt Roy's slot.* (Team editor Katrice Hardy)* *This team is seeking a reporter to cover public safety in the urban cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth. This reporter will be expected to aggressively write breaking news for online and print, features, explanatory and investigative articles about criminal justice that readers will find compelling and worthy of conversation. The successful candidate will be tenacious and experienced in ferreting out information from officials and public records. The reporter will develop enterprise stories about issues and human-interest stories and put a human face on crime and safety. The reporter must also be willing to work nights and weekends to cover breaking news. Job code 2342. *Staff Writer/Transportation Beat*. (Team editor Bill Bartel) The position involves intensive coverage of transportation systems, including roads, mass transit and air service, in a competitive environment. The beat is a complex one that requires a strong commitment to mastering the intricacies of regional and state transportation politics, the details of land and air transportation systems and the emerging trends caused by rising costs and traffic congestion. Job code 2345. *Designer/Presentation Team*. (Team editor Paul Nelson) This designer must be able to conceive and execute display pages, write display type, including headlines, promos and fact boxes. The successful candidate for this job will have the ability to design pages using Adobe InDesign; know how to collaborate with reporters, editors and photographers to create compelling pages, and be able to create visual impact using sometimes disparate or hard-to-obtain elements. Hours are 3 p.m. to midnight; holidays and weekends required. Job code 2271. You can apply for these jobs through the intranet ( http://pilotintra.net/insider/). Click on Job Postings in the left rail, then click on Advanced Job Search on the right, then enter the appropriate job code. Outside candidates can apply online at http://www.thevirginianpilot.com/careers. (Click on Opportunities, click on Search for Jobs, click on Quick Job Search, enter appropriate job code.) As a result, I am looking to get the hell out of Dodge. If anyone knows of an editorial position available in the NYC area, please let me know. I'm willing to travel as far as an hour from NYC into Jersey or CT or Westchester. I'm a copy editor at the Utica Observer-Dispatch, another GateHouse newspaper. New articles pop up every day about GateHouse and how it's dying quickly. When we do the daily stock chart, it usually comes up how GateHouse has gone down more. The other day it went up 2 cents, which was quite a shock. The company's downward spiral - as well as many other companies - always comes up as a topic in meetings, discussions, etc. Its shares yesterday fell below $2. It was around $11 or $13 when I started working for the O-D last year. We are one of the bigger GateHouse newspapers, and the only newspaper in Utica, so I don't see us going anywhere, but GateHouse owns a lot of tiny newspapers. It's something to worry about. Especially since the O-D went through a sale last year (from Gannett to GateHouse). John James and Melissa Hart broke free from the O-D at the right time haha. I agree with Monica about getting out of Dodge, in my case, the
journalism industry. I'll still be interested in newspapers, but just
as a hobby.

My employer, GateHouse Media, recently> decided to do away with merit
pay raises, however, we can expect an increase in our contribution to
the health plan. In the end, we're getting a pay decrease, just as
prices for everything surge.

So my wife just graduated from law school and got a job with the
Supreme Court of Guam. So we're moving to Guam in a month. Rather than
getting a third dead-end journalism job (Guam has a Gannett paper),
I'm going back to school to study nursing.

Josh, best of luck to you as you embark on what will certainly be a life-changing experience. Monica, I am also out of the journalism field. There just doesn't seem to be a place in newspapers anymore for someone who wants to write stories that will change even a small part of the world (at least not in the papers I have seen). It seems to be about filling up inches more than anything else anymore. I may one day return to the field. But it won't be until it pays a livable wage and I have some creative freedom.

What GateHouse newspaper do you work for?

I agree with Monica about getting out of Dodge, in my case, the
journalism industry. I'll still be interested in newspapers, but just

So my wife just graduated from law school and got a job with the

Josh, best of luck to you as you embark on what will certainly be a life-changing experience. Monica, I am also out of the journalism field. There just doesn't seem to be a place in newspapers anymore for someone who wants to write stories that will change even a small part of the world (at least not in the papers I have seen). It seems to be about filling up inches more than anything else anymore. I may one day return to the field. But it won't be until it pays a livable wage and I have some creative freedom.

Very exciting adventure for you and your wife. I think your degree in journalism will make you a more compassionate, caring, attentive and communicative nurse, so the degree would not have been wasted. As for all the Listserv posts this past week about the gloom and doom of the journalism industry, there are still jobs to be had. You will just need to think outside of the box and your comfort zone, though. It may require relocation and some retraining, but there are jobs available for people with the skills and experience that you all have. The money will rarely be incredible, but you knew going into the major that you were entering a field that is historically low-paying. If we were in it for the money, we'd have pursued law, medicine or computers. Great to receive the alumni updates. Keep them coming! Shawn Murphy SUNY Journalism Dept. Becket is a small private school in NH for emotionally disturbed young men between the ages of 13-23. I work exclusively with young men who are 18-23 and in need of a high school diploma, job skills, and life skills. I spent a good chunk of my day tutoring guys in core academic subjects. While working on english cirriculum I frequently use newspapers and magazines as teaching tools. Some guys are learning how to read so a newspaper is a good place to start. some guys are learning how to decipher appreviations in help wanted ads- and some of the guys who have been in lock down since they were 13 are learning about the world around them. I use skills I gained from my major EVERYDAY! One student recently learned the difference between a noun and an adjective...This particular student gets easily frustrated because he has a hard time getting a grasp on some subjects so he takes it out in a physically or verbally aggressive manner. During the height of his frustration he called me a "dirty B**ch!" (this is something I have become accustomed to hearing while working with this population of males) After he called me this his anger quickly turned to laughter when he realized "dirty" was an adjective describing a noun, me, the b**ch.....it was a small but notable victory....Anyways, maybe i'm not writing for a paper or a magazine...but i'm using skills I would not have acquired had i not majored in journalism....hope all is well in plattsburgh...take care----Hannah Trott htrott1@hotmail.com > From: journalism-alumni-request@lists.plattsburgh.edu> Subject: Journalism-alumni Digest, Vol 19, Issue 8> To: journalism-alumni@lists.plattsburgh.edu> Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2008 12:00:04 -0400> > Send Journalism-alumni mailing list submissions to> journalism-alumni@lists.plattsburgh.edu> > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit> http://lists.plattsburgh.edu/mailman/listinfo/journalism-alumni> or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to> journalism-alumni-request@lists.plattsburgh.edu> > You can reach the person managing the list at> journalism-alumni-owner@lists.plattsburgh.edu> > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific> than "Re: Contents of Journalism-alumni digest..."> > > Today's Topics:> > 1.
