What are Mailing Lists?Mailing lists offer an efficient way to send information such as announcements to a large number of interested people, as well as a means for electronic discussion. Creating a mailing list gives you a common email address for all list subscribers, which can be used by any of those subscribers to send e-mail to all other subscribers. A good analogy might be that of a list in your e-mail address book, though a mailing list has the distinct advantage that the management of the list is coordinated by a central server, so each member of the list need not manage their own address list. If you are a list owner, you gain control over all subscriptions and traffic on your list, and become responsible for the maintenance of the list. Visit the List Of Available Mailing Lists. Mailing List RolesList SubscriberA mailing list subscriber is simply a user of the mailing list who can send e-mail to and receive e-mail from the list. As a subscriber, you may subscribe to as few or as many mailing lists as you wish. To subscribe to a list, simply send a blank e-mail to [listname]-subscribe@lists.plattsburgh.edu. For example, to subscribe to a list named "technology", send a blank e-mail to technology-subscribe@lists.plattsburgh.edu. Make sure you qualify the "@lists.plattsburgh.edu" portion, as mailing list traffic directed to "@plattsburgh.edu" addresses will bounce as the primary mailserver will not understand the request. A listing of all public mailing lists on the system is available at http://lists.plattsburgh.edu/mailman/listinfo. List Owner/ModeratorA list owner or moderator is the user who has elected to be responsible for the maintenance of a particular list. If you serve in this capacity, your duties may include the approval of subscriptions, review of messages posted to your list, and configuration of list behavior. All moderation options are accessed through the web interface for your list. A list owner may of course choose to allow a completely open list (all subscriptions and postings are allowed to happen unmoderated) and have almost nothing to do. You MUST be a full or part time faculty or staff member of Plattsburgh State with a valid plattsburgh.edu e-mail address and user account to be considered for moderation/ownership of a mailing list. Creating New ListsIf you would like to request that a new mailing list be created, please print and fill out the request form, then send it to Symen Mulders, Computing & Media Services, Feinberg Library. If approved, the list will be created and the initial password for management of the list will be mailed to your local account. If you have any questions about list creation/moderation, send e-mail to mailman@lists.plattsburgh.edu. PoliciesMailing lists are created for use by members of the Plattsburgh State community. While external users are not excluded from subscribing to mailing lists, you MUST be a member of the Plattsburgh State community with a valid plattsburgh.edu e-mail address and user account to be considered for moderation/ownership of a mailing list. All content posted to any mailing list on this server is the property of the individual who posts it. Plattsburgh State is not responsible for the content and does not necessarily endorse the opinions appearing on the mailing lists and in the message archives. All established policies relating to multiuser systems remain in full effect for mailing lists. |
